As Lone Star Art Guild approaches the 50th anniversary as an art guild, April 7, 2011, there is a host of leaders to whom we dedicate this year.
Only five years after founding Brenham Fine Arts League, co-founders Jeanne H. Hawley. Madeleine Scwecke, and Golda Johnson, with several other BFAJL members worked to unite several art leagues in the 150-mile radius of Houston for an annual convention featuring only award-winning art, under a mixed-league board known as the LSAG.
Mrs. Dorothy Hargraves, the second LSAG President, is now remembered annually in the Dorothy Hargraves Best Floral Memorial Award given at each convention.
The basics of the convention were set in those early days, and since then we have grown to include leagues within a 200-mile radius of Houston, as well as now accepting not only traditional fine art but also modern art media and styles. We member leagues encourage artists of every level of ability, young students as well as more mature artists, leading towards a great convention experience to be enjoyed by hundreds of artists.
Mrs. Jeanne H. Hawley and Mrs. Dorothy Hargraves worked for the first few years of LSAG, seeking out leagues, locations, and people to carry on with the convention after her. Our 42 Past-Presidents are featured in these pages, but many leaders are less obvious. People that have worked hard in the trenches include, but are not limited to - Ralph Baker, Walter Spears, Michelle Evans, Russell Cushman. Ed Huey, Barbara Rushing, and Nancy Lee (LSAG President 2003).
We would like to honor Nancy Lee. Nancy D. Lee worked with the Lone Star Art Guild Board of Directors for the past decade, leading, helping, mentoring, and advising, as new board members stepped into their roles. She has served as a mentor for new member leagues, as those groups organized and joined the guild. She played a key role in the registration of convention-ready art, no small task, and her e-mails kept everyone connected.
"Nancy Lee put 300% in everything she did for LSAG," says Karen Rome, who is a friend.
