LSAG Prospectus for ALL LSAG Sanctioned Shows
ALL ARTISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING THIS PROSPECTUS & COMPLYING WITH IT. YOUR USE of the DATABASE IS YOUR AGREEMENT TO ABIDE BY THESE GUIDELINES & RULES. YOU MAY BE ASKED TO SIGN ANOTHER AGREEMENT WITH THE LEAGUE AT ART INTAKE. THIS PROSPECTUS APPLIES TO BOTH THE LEAGUE LEVEL SHOWS AND THE CONVENTION SHOW. Artwork that does not comply with THIS LSAG prospectus may NOT be added to the LSAG database.
ART WORK ELIGIBILITY:
All artwork is to comply with ALL LSAG show rules and guidelines as described below and any further guidelines established by the member art league hosting the show PROVIDED they are not in conflict with LSAG rules and guidelines. Check each of your entries for its compliance to the prospectus below. You may NOT add pieces that are not eligible under these policies to the database.
Notes on oversized pieces:
-No 3-D artwork is to be heavier than 25 lbs and sculptural pieces must have a sturdy base.
-Exhibiting artwork wider than 36 inches and/or heavier than 3 lbs requires special consideration. A sturdy easel must be provided by the artist for displaying this type of artwork.
Notes on small, delicate pieces:
-Small, delicate and fragile 3-D art (earrings, paper sculpture, etc) must be encased or framed and ready to hang or place on a flat table top or pedestal surface.
Notes on diptychs & triptychs:
-A diptych and a triptych by definition are respectively 2 or 3 parts of a whole. For registering on the LSAG database or the inputting of information about a diptych or triptych, these works count as ONE ENTRY listed as ONE TITLE with the word in parentheses of diptych or triptych [ie- Seasonal Colors (triptych) or Pastel Duet (diptych)].
-LSAG will charge each diptych or triptych ONE entry fee for convention qualifiers. HOWEVER, a local league may charge differently for their show though we discourage this. Leagues have the prerogative for doing so according to their own prospectus. Always check the league prospectus for any further details or requirements for their show.
Notes on photography & digital art:
-Photography is a composition made at the moment of exposure using the camera as well as camera equipment by adjusting the aperture &/or speed, using lighting &/or shadow, & other adjustments in the environment in which it is taken as well as camera equipment. In this category, the artist has attempted to achieve desired affects at the time of exposure. MINOR cropping & MINOR adjustment in contrast or brightness is allowed. Photographic creativity is largely achieved AT THE TIME the photograph is taken. A show chair reserves the right to request the original jpeg of the photograph for proof of eligibility.
-Digital Art can begin with a photograph though it does not need to. Digital Art can be created exclusively with digital means and have nothing to do with photography whatsoever. The notes below are for those that do begin with a photograph to aid in distinguishing it from the photography category.
IF it begins with a photograph and is then greatly digitally manipulated OR enhanced, it would be in the Digital Art category
----NOT photography. This includes but is not limited to a multitude of photographs being combined, removal of parts of a photo, inserting other parts of photos, major cropping, GREATLY adjusting the color, texture, contrast, brightness, etc., the use of special technology & affects on a computer or other digital equipment (NOT camera equipment)...all things that occur after the photograph is taken. (IF a photograph is used). Digital art using a photograph is greatly manipulating that photography OR using technology EXCLUSIVELY to design & create art. The creativity of the artist is demonstrated often AFTER the photograph is taken (IF a photograph is used) OR at the computer or using other technology.

- LSAG sanctioned shows are for INDIVIDUAL artists only who have completed start to finish a piece(s) of artwork. Shows feature INDIVIDUAL artists competing against other INDIVIDUAL artists. COLLABORATIONS and jointly working on an individual piece by more than one person or with a team is NOT allowed and will NOT qualify for the LSAG Convention Juried Exhibit regardless of ribbons won. You may NOT enter it in the database. Leagues may wish to have this as their OWN category for the purposes of their show only, HOWEVER, LSAG does NOT recognize winners in this category & they may not be added to the database.
- All works that are hung must have a wire for hanging. NO sawtooth hangers, 'O' rings, or ANY other creative arrangements. For hanging all 2-D artwork or any 3D artwork that is hung on the panels, a wire should be attached on each side of the top back of the piece so it can easily be hung on the panel.
- Artwork must have been completed within the last two (2) years.
- Artwork must be completely your own original work.
- Any given piece of artwork may ONLY receive a maximum of two (2) PLACE ribbons not including NON-qualifying Honorable Mentions. Once it has received two (2) qualifying ribbons, it may NOT be entered in another show. A PLACE ribbon would be ANY Best of Award, 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, & FIRST Honorable Mention (Regular Honorable Mentions are NOT place ribbons).
- Once an artwork has received a 'best of' or first place ribbon, it may NOT be entered in another show.
- Qualifying artworks may be entered only ONCE in an LSAG convention show. Once a piece goes through a season, qualifies, and goes to the convention show, it may NOT be entered into another show ---league or convention--- ever again, not another year, & not another league's show.
- Each piece of artwork must have a title. “Unnamed” or “Untitled” is not acceptable.
- Artworks must be appropriate for a family friendly event. We have members from elementary age to retired. Specifically, do NOT register or bring nudes (including partial nudes), gory violence, & / or obscenities in words or in depictions nor in the title. We respect that you may do this type of work; it is NOT appropriate for our shows however. If a local show allows a nude that wins a ribbon & qualifies for the convention show, it will NOT be hung at convention & fees will NOT be reimbursed. You may NOT enter anything that qualifies as a nude, gore, violence, or obscenities in words or depictions in the database.
- All artwork must fit comfortably through show location doors.
- All artwork must be completely dry and ready to hang or display when submitted during intake for the show.
- We regret that if a league's leadership lets you break any of the rules, your piece will NOT be allowed at the LSAG juried show even if it qualifies according to its ribbons. Entry fees in this situation will not be reimbursed. You should NOT be using the database for any piece that is not qualified under these guidelines.
- Please note the requirements continued below under Notes.

Leagues have the prerogative for doing so according to their own prospectus. Always check the league prospectus for any further details or requirements for their show.

Notes on registering for a show:
- CHECK the CHECKLIST: -Individual Artist (No collaborations) -Single wire hanging for 2D & hangable 3D / Provide a Stand for larger 3D (see also other notes on weight of 3D works) -2 year old artwork or less -Original / No copies -Complies with previous award limitations (see blue above) -Titled -Family Friendly (see red above) -Fits through the show doors -Dry (No wet artwork) -Entered in correct art category (Artists in Photography &/or Digital Art: It is imperative you read the descriptions above detailing the differences between the two.) -Artist is represented in correct division based on lifetime experience doing art (Not on newness to LSAG or their league)
- Please read the prospectus for that league's show BEFORE entering.
- Entries MUST meet ALL eligibility requirements as stated above. Leagues and their members may NOT use the database for entries that do not comply with the LSAG prospectus.
- Entries must be completed in the registration process online by the registration deadline on the prospectus. Mailed in registrations if accepted need to be postmarked by date specified or meet other registration requirements set forth by that league. Not all shows accept walk in / last minute registrations. Some shows require online entry. Check the prospectus.
- Local league shows are judged meaning all eligible entries meeting the appropriate deadlines will be included in the show ---hung & judged. The LSAG Convention show is juried meaning only those pieces that have won a 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, or FIRST Honorable Mention (up to 1 in each category and per division) and any "Best of" award received that art year (approximately August to April or May depending on the closing date for convention) are eligible for the convention show. Registration for convention is exclusively through the database & exclusively for eligible members. Registration for local league shows are determined by the local league, HOWEVER, all winning artwork eligible for convention MUST be in the LSAG database.
- If you entered a show as a NON-member & won a ribbon that qualifies you for the convention, you may still enter the annual juried convention show by becoming a member of an LSAG league. NON-members are otherwise NOT eligible to participate or compete at the LSAG convention show.
- Be certain the entry size is entered correctly. Length is top to bottom; width is right to left; depth is the distance it extends when hung flat against the wall if 2D or front to back at its widest point if 3D. If depth is minimal, give 1" or 2" for that value.
- After your entry has been received, the art registration information CANNOT be revised or changed. This includes the title of the entry and size. NO substitutions of artwork can be made.
- Check that league's prospectus for their payment process. Some require pre-payment to be mailed while others take payment at the time of intake. Do NOT send local league show fees to LSAG. If mailed, send it to the local league leadership as per their prospectus.
- SELECT A CATEGORY for YOUR PIECE: A category for your art is based on what you used and how you did your art. It is NOT a simple question of what your art looks like. Read the categories and consider what you USED and HOW you did your art. LSAG only recognizes wins in the following categories provided all other rules and eligibility have been met. Re-distribution of wins is NOT tolerated. You must win an eligible ribbon (Best of, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or FIRST Honorable Mention--which are limited to one each of place ribbon per category and per division & 1 each of 'Best of' type) in one of the categories below.
There are ten (10) Art Categories which are generally separated by art types and medium used (not the medium it resembles). The following guidelines were written to assist artists in choosing the appropriate category for their artwork. Please read them carefully. It does not benefit you to enter a piece in an incorrect category. It may be disqualified in the LSAG Convention show if it does not qualify for that category.
Category A: Oil/Acrylic Painting – oil paintings and acrylic paintings painted like an oil painting
Category B: Watercolor/Acrylic Painting – watercolor and acrylic paintings applied with water giving the appearance of a watercolor painting
Category C: Pastels – pastels including pastels applied over a watercolor underpainting
Category D: Drawing – drawing of any kind & including Sumi-e and oriental brush painting
Category E: Mixed Media – artwork displaying two or more types of media, including but not limited to collage, encaustic painting and other mixed media
Category F: Photography – digital or film photography MINIMALLY manipulated or adjusted PLEASE SEE NOTES ABOVE.
Category G: Digital Art – all forms of digital art including but not limited to photography that has been SIGNIFICANTLY manipulated or altered using technology PLEASE SEE NOTES ABOVE. Digital Art is DIGITAL. If something starts with a photograph & is then altered with paint, pen, or anything OTHER THAN a computer, then it is NOT digital art. You may wish to consider Mixed Media (E) if two or multiple mediums are used.
Category H: Abstract/ Experimental/Non-Objective Art – in any medium
Category I: Sculpture – 3-D forms in various media including sculptures in relief PLEASE SEE NOTES ABOVE.
Category J: Studio Fine Crafts – original fine crafts created in a studio environment including glass blowing, stained glass, printmaking, porcelain / ceramics, woodwork, jewelry, mosaic, weaving, fiber art, metal work, and other finely crafted items PLEASE SEE NOTES ABOVE.
- SELECT AN ARTIST DIVISION: Artist division is based on your life experience with creating art, NOT your LSAG experience or newness to an art league. A person who has been painting for 10 years is NOT qualified to be an Adult Student, for example. Neither is anyone who has been an Adult Student for 3 years already or those who have already completed 2 years of college level art. Those with college degrees in art should consider Semi-Professional or Professional as an appropriate division.
- There are five (5) Artist Divisions. An artist selects a division based on their life art experience ---NOT their experience with LSAG or an art league. These divisions are separated by the following primary SKILL LEVELS:
I. Professional – Artist’s choice for this designation (Please note: If you are a professional artist making a living at selling your art, you will need to register as a professional. If you are promoting yourself as a professional elsewhere or on your website, please be sure you are competing in the professional division as well.)
II. Semi-Professional - Artist’s choice to move up
III. Non-Professional - Artist’s choice to move up
IV. Adult Student – Adult who has created artwork for less than three years (read further for details) either through self-study or under the direction of an art teacher. The teacher may give any verbal assistance needed; however, the teacher MAY NOT PHYSICALLY WORK ON the artwork to be entered in a show. After 2 years of College Art (4 art courses) or 3 years as a self taught Adult Student, any LSAG member MUST enter the Non-Professional Division. This is the only division where one is REQUIRED to move up after a set time. ***Please be aware: If you are just starting out in LSAG, you do NOT automatically begin at this level. Artist division is based on your life experience with creating art, NOT your LSAG experience or newness to an art league. A person who has been painting for 10 years is NOT qualified to be an Adult Student, for example. A person who has been a portrait photographer for 10 years is NOT qualified to be an Adult Student, for example. Neither is anyone who has been in this division for 3 years or those who have taken 2 years of college level art. Those with college degrees in art should not begin at this level. This should be obvious. - V. School Student - Any school student, Elementary, Middle or High School. Homeschool students should register under the grade level the student would be in based upon their age equivalent ---not skill level. School students will be subdivided according to grade level: K-5 = Elementary; 6-8 = Middle School; 9-12 = High School. Levels are indicated as V-ES for Elementary, V-MS for Middle School, and V-HS for High School.
Once you arrive at art intake:
- Arrive at the scheduled intake time & BEFORE take in closes so you have time to attach labels and do other prep work in time.
- ID Tags should be placed on both the front and back of the art piece. Check with the league; some provide these already printed while others have you fill them out.
- Artwork CANNOT be removed prior to the closing of show. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- LSAG shows are to be BLIND judged meaning the judge should NOT see any names of artists or signatures on artwork or be told any information about an artist or piece. Be sure names and signatures are covered on any artwork prior to submitting them for hanging. Those who walk with the judge and serve as assistants may NOT under any circumstance speak about an artist or piece even if the judge asks a question. League leadership needs to emphasize to judges that they, the judges, were hired to be the experts, and that assistants are not experts. Judges should not seek nor accept any comments from assistants / show helpers.
- Your membership dues are to be current with that league or your home league (if different) before registering in order to qualify for the specified entry fee.
- AGAIN, it is worth repeating that each artist retains FULL RESPONSIBILITY for following the rules including ALL eligibility requirements. Failure to do so will result in a piece(s) NOT being eligible for convention and can also possibly lead to further sanctions against an artist.
